Unlike many other sports, martial arts focuses not only on fitness and entertainment, but helps people learn how to protect themselves and stay safe in potentially dangerous situations! That being said…..

Have you always wanted to learn martial arts, but you just don’t have the time or the prices to join a school might be a bit too high? If that’s the case, then I have great news for you! Learning martial arts and becoming a martial artists does not mean that you have to join a school right away and/or start training at a dojo. In fact, there are many low priced and even free alternatives that you can start at home, today!

In this blog post, we are going to outline some important steps that you should take before beginning to train martial arts or learn self-defence at home!

Step #1: Choose Your Style of Martial Arts!

This means that you will need to put some research in to the type of style that you wish to learn!

Some popular examples of martial arts styles include:

  • Kickboxing: a form of martial arts that focuses mainly on kicking and punching!

  • Taekwondo: a Korean form of martial arts that puts emphasis on kicking techniques!

  • Karate: a Japanese form of martial arts that focuses on defence and counterattack based techniques.

  • Kung Fu: a Chinese form of martial arts that focuses on self-defence, but also emphasis the importance of self-discipline and focus.

Now, these are just a few of the many options of martial arts styles that you can choose from and only a brief description of each one, but hopefully its a good starting off point while you think about the one you’re interested in trying.

Step #2: Create a Training Schedule!

One of the number one reasons why we see people struggle with training in martial arts is because they cannot find the time to practice. That’s why this step is extremely important! We recommend that you try and spend at least two days per week training for a minimum of 45 minutes.

Of course, this number can change depending on how much time you have or what kind of goals you are hoping to accomplish. However, a typical training schedule might look something like this:

Monday: 8:00am – 8:45am – Taekwondo Practice

Tuesday: Break

Wednesday: 8:00am – 8:45am – Taekwondo Practice

Thursday: Break

Friday: 8:00am – 8:45am – Taekwondo Review (What you’ve practiced this week)

Saturday – Sunday: Break

This schedule can be altered to fit the times and days that works best for you schedule, but it’s important to designate the time and day you wish to practice and then stick to it!

Step #3: Create a Lesson Plan!

This will be the most difficult part of starting to train martial arts at home and will likely take some research and time to find a program that fits you.

The easiest way to come up with a good lesson plan is to find an online course in the martial art style that you wish to practice and follow along with a set program. This will be less expensive than training at a dojo or school, but might still cost some money depending on the program that you choose. Leave a comment on this blog post if you know of any good online programs to follow!

The next option to start learning online is to use…YouTube! There are so many different creators that share super useful tips and advice on how you can begin your martial arts journey, even while practicing at home! Some of our favourites are https://www.karatebyjesse.com or https://taekwondoshawn.com who regularly upload free content on their social media pages!

It’s important to find an instructor or teacher that you feel will help you progress and reach your goals! Next, using the information found online, create a program that allows you to consistently practice your desired techniques and use the video resources to check if you are completing the motions correctly.

You can always try and reach out to any creators you choose to learn from! I’m sure they will happy to help when they can!

Step #4: Start Training

You’ve done it! You chose a style, created a training schedule, and found a course or YouTube Channel to help you learn. Now…it’s time to start training! The key to becoming a good martial artist is consistency and perseverance. Martial arts requires constant growth and you should have the mindset of being a student forever. It’s not possible to become an expert in one day or even one month, but with hardworking and a positive attitude you will become a accomplished martial artists in no time!

Extra Tips:

Equipment:

This will heavily depend on the martial art style that you choose to learn, but sometimes investing in the right equipment is worth it! For example, if you want to train in boxing then it would be a good idea to pick up some gloves and a punching bag.

Safety:

It can be dangerous to practice martial arts at home. The last thing you want is to try and kick or punch and end up with an injury! Here is some tips we recommend to help prevent this!

  • Stretch before your lessons! Always make sure to warm up and stretch your body before beginning to train.

  • Train with a friend! It helps to have someone there to look out for you and help if anything does happen to go wrong.

  • Make sure you have enough room. This can mean moving some things around in your room or even training outside at the park or a sports centre.

We hope that you have an amazing time learning martial arts and make sure not to give up along the way! Check our blog regularly for tips and videos on how you can continue to learn and grow online.

We appreciate any comments left on our post that might help other aspiring martial artists to learn at home!
