What are the benefits of Taekwondo training?
Taekwondo is something that transcends all other ‘afterschool activities.’ Being both an Olympic sport AND a martial art gives Taekwondo a certain quality which educators, councillors, and the like all agree can benefit people of all ages.
Physical Fitness and Health Benefits
First of all, and the most simple benefit to see is the physical benefits; the health benefits.
On the mats of our first class we sometimes find that it is difficult to keep up with our peers. As we continue training multiple times per week, we find our cardiovascular health, strength, flexibility, and overall physical condition begins to improve. (sometimes we don’t even realize it until someone shows us a video of ourselves as a white belt!)
Regular practicing also helps us keep a healthy weight, enhances our stamina, and promotes a healthy lifestyle. (Many of our students find it’s easier to make other lifestyle choices once they begin on the self-improvement path!)
Whether you’re a child improving coordination, a cross training youth, or an adult trying to stay in shape while life gets so busy all around us… Taekwondo is an excellent choice for all ages.
Mental and Emotional Development
Secondly, as a martial art with have a distinct emphasis on discipline, focus, and perseverance. Improvements in the area of character can lead to improved concentration and academic performance in children. (For adults like myself, I see a benefit in emotional regulation—my children can find endless ways to challenge me and I find Taekwondo training has helped me with being patient… I exercise my self control on a daily basis!)
Learning self-control and respect for others are core tenets of Taekwondo. We work hard to foster a positive mental attitude and develop emotional resilience. The five tenets of Taekwondo include but are absolutely not limited to:
Courtesy
Integrity
Self Control
Indomitable Spirit
Perseverance
These are the kinds of things which are harder to see on a daily basis… but you will notice improvements off the mats as time goes by.
Self-Defence Skills and Personal Safety
Lastly we have the area of improvement that most parents want to see in their children. Maybe there is a bully in the classroom or the school. Maybe our children are walking home with friends or are very independent. Taekwondo equips our students with practical self-defence techniques that increase personal safety and provide peace of mind. Taekwondo training instills a sense of inner self-reliance which translates to empowerment and students being able to protect themselves and others. By promoting awareness and quick decision-making skills, taekwondo helps students develop confidence to handle unexpected challenges and situations.
