FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Taekwondo?
Taekwondo is an art of self-defense that originated in South Korea over 2000+ years ago. It was originally designed to train soldiers in the army, a practice that continues to be used today.
Taekwondo has since been recognized as an official Olympic sport in the year 2000 and has gained worldwide recognition.
Taekwondo can be separated into three categories. “Tae” the foot, “Kwon” the hand, and “Do” the art. It focuses on training its practitioners in both self-defence of using the hands and feet but also the mentality and spiritual fortitude of its students.
This can be seen through the important of the 5 Tenants of Taekwondo “Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit”.
How is Taekwondo different than karate?
Taekwondo and karate are more similar than they are different. One originated from japan and the other from korea. Taekwondo is an olympic sport where karate is not. Both use the coloured and black belt system. Both use their hands and feet to execute techniques and patterns. Both are good for self defence. Both are good for building a strong character and body. Both will be beneficial for you and/or your children!
How long does it take to get a blackbelt?
The typical student can expect to earn their blackbelt within 3-5 years depending on how much practice they do at home, how many breaks and vacations they take, and how much effort they put into each class they train!
Who should train Taekwondo?
Taekwondo is for every age, race, culture, and gender! No one will or should be excluded from learning the valuable lessons and skills that can come from training in Taekwondo.
At AOT (Art Of Taekwondo), we offer classes for all ages and skill levels. We will make sure to construct a program that caters to your abilities and will allow you to progress at a pace that best fits your goals.
